Insiders at Kaizer Chiefs are backing Vanderlei Luxemburgo, a former Real Madrid coach, to take over from interim coach Cavin Johnson at the end of the season. Luxemburgo, a Brazilian, is among the five names on Chiefs’ shortlist for the job, according to sources.
Other contenders on the list are Alexandre Gallo and Raul Caneda from Brazil, as well as South Africans Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi. Sources close to the club believe Luxemburgo’s experience, including his stint at Real Madrid in 2004-05, makes him a suitable candidate despite his recent departure from Corinthians.
“Vanderlei knows European football well, and his style could fit Kaizer Chiefs,” said one source. “His track record with big teams shows he can handle the pressure.” Another source emphasized that while Luxemburgo is a favorite, Pitso Mosimane remains Chiefs’ top choice. However, Mosimane’s availability depends on his contract situation with Abha Club.

Luxemburgo, 71, has coached several top clubs in Brazil, including Vasco Da Gama, Flamengo, and Santos. Despite attempts to reach out for comment, Chiefs did not respond by the time of publication. The decision ultimately hinges on whether Mosimane becomes available, leaving Chiefs in a waiting game as they consider their options.
