In a surprising turn of events, SuperSport United have announced that they have parted ways with head coach Gavin Hunt with immediate effect. The club made this statement public, marking the end of Hunt’s second tenure, during which he managed 97 matches.
In an official statement, SuperSport United expressed their gratitude towards Hunt for his contributions over the years. “SuperSport United FC and Head Coach Gavin Hunt have reached a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect,” the club’s statement read. The board and management thanked Hunt for his extensive work and the impact he has had on the club and South African football as a whole. They also underscored their belief in his capabilities, suggesting that he still has much to contribute to the sport on both national and continental levels.
As SuperSport United navigates this transition, goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson will join Andre Arendse, who will serve as interim head coach.
This decision comes at a challenging time for SuperSport United, who have struggled on the pitch this season. In 2025, the team has managed to accumulate only five points after nine matches, with a record of one win, two draws, and six losses. This disappointing performance has left them languishing in 15th place in the league standings with a total of 21 points from 21 games, making them the only team in the league with fewer than 10 points this year.
The club’s management will be keen to turn their fortunes around, and as they seek a new leader to steer the ship, they will undoubtedly reflect on the tremendous legacy left by Gavin Hunt during his time with SuperSport United.
