Mamelodi Sundowns have thrown their hat into the ring, joining the pursuit of Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole’s signature. Sithole, who spent last season on loan at Portuguese top-flight side Gil Vicente, has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs, but Sundowns’ interest has added a new twist to the transfer saga.
Sithole’s agent, Manuel Tomas, revealed that Kaizer Chiefs expressed interest in December, but no official offer has been made. “We received some calls from Chiefs, but that’s as far as it went,” Tomas said.
Sources close to the transfer suggest that Sithole is eager to play in the Club World Cup and CAF Champions League, and at 27, he believes he’s ready for the challenge. With Sundowns guaranteed a spot in both competitions, they may have the upper hand in the pursuit of Sithole’s signature.
However, Kaizer Chiefs can still qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup if they win the Nedbank Cup. The Amakhosi will need to pull out all the stops to convince Sithole to join their ranks.
