In a captivating encounter that saw seven goals scored, South Africa’s U-17 team, Amajimbos, emerged victorious with a 4-3 win over Egypt in their Group B opener at the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The match burst into life within the first minute, as South Africa’s Emile Witbooi, the Cape Town City starlet, broke through the Egyptian defense. Witbooi cleverly rounded goalkeeper Omar Abdelaziz and provided a precise cross for Simphiwi Mlondo to score with a well-placed finish.
Despite taking an early lead, Amajimbos struggled to maintain their momentum, conceding three goals to Egypt. However, the team demonstrated remarkable character and resilience, fighting their way back into the game to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory.
South Africa’s coach, Vela Khumalo, praised his team’s performance, emphasizing their commitment to possession-based football. “We want to keep the ball, this is what South African football is all about, we wanted Egypt to deplete their energy,” Khumalo explained.
The win marks a promising start for Amajimbos in the tournament, and they will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches.
