The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is contemplating severe sanctions against Royal AM, including expulsion from the league, due to the club’s ongoing financial and legal troubles.
Royal AM’s problems have been mounting since 2024, with their games being abandoned and the club facing investigation. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has taken control of the club’s owner’s assets, including the team itself.
The club’s financial struggles have resulted in payment delays to players and difficulties accessing training facilities. These issues have raised concerns about Royal AM’s ability to continue participating in the league.
According to PSL rules, specifically section 57.13, the league has the authority to suspend or relegate the team. If this occurs, the PSL will proceed with a 15-team league for the remainder of the season.
Royal AM is currently languishing at the bottom of the table, having played only 11 games, with their last match taking place on December 29th.
The club’s financial woes began to unravel when former striker Samir Nurkovic was owed R6 million, which eventually escalated to R15 million. Another former player, Ricardo Nascimento, was owed R600,000, which he sought to settle for R300,000.
SARS’ initial claim of R10 million against the club has now ballooned to R37 million. Royal AM’s attempts to resume play have been unsuccessful, leaving their future in the league hanging in the balance.
As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is certain, Royal AM’s fate in the PSL hangs precariously in the balance. Will they manage to navigate these treacherous waters?
