In a surprising turn of events, Cape Town City FC has publicly rejected the initial offer made by Mamelodi Sundowns FC for their talented winger or attacker, Khanyisa Mayo.
Khanyisa Mayo expressed that there was interest in him during January, but he remains under contract with Cape Town City until 2028 and is happy where he currently is. He mentioned that the club did not want to sell him, and he is content with his situation. Mayo also mentioned that he received recognition from Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos and is enjoying the best football of his career. However, Mayo acknowledged that playing for a prestigious club like Kaizer Chiefs is a dream for every young player, especially considering his father’s history with the team.
Patrick Mayo, the father of Khanyisa Mayo and a prominent South African football analyst, made it clear that joining Mamelodi Sundowns FC would be detrimental to his son’s career due to the team’s playing style. He firmly believes that his son’s talent would be stifled if he were to join the Chloorkop-based team.
The news of Mamelodi Sundowns FC’s interest in Mayo had been circulating in various media outlets, drawing comparisons to Kaizer Chiefs FC’s pursuit of the player. However, Patrick Mayo’s public rejection of Mamelodi Sundowns FC has cast doubt on the potential transfer.
Adding to the dissenting voices, former Orlando Pirates FC and Mamelodi Sundowns FC player, Tsho Vilakazi, also shared his advice with Mayo.
Vilakazi cautioned him against joining Mamelodi Sundowns FC, citing the presence of established players like Peter Shalulile, making it difficult for Mayo to secure a spot in the starting lineup. Instead, Vilakazi recommended that Mayo consider joining Kaizer Chiefs FC, emphasizing that the team lacks a player of his caliber.
He also praised Mayo for his advantageous height, highlighting how it can benefit him in protecting the ball.
The rejection of Mamelodi Sundowns FC’s bid by Cape Town City FC, along with the advice from football veterans like Patrick Mayo and Tsho Vilakazi, has brought Mayo’s potential transfer to the forefront of discussions in South African football circles. It remains to be seen how these developments will impact Mayo’s future and whether other clubs will enter the race to secure his services.
