Following his move to Raja Casablanca, the agent of midfielder Haashim Domingo has revealed the player was offered to Kaizer Chiefs prior to sealing a two-year deal with the Moroccan giants.
“It’s true, Chiefs were keen – but we are still waiting for Kaizer [Motaung] Jnr, I think he lost my number or perhaps it has to do with reports they are waiting to appoint a new coach,” said Lance Davids of Football First, while adding Domingo’s transfer to North Africa happened almost overnight.
The 27-year-old became a free agent earlier this month when Davids confirmed to SABC Sport talks with Mamelodi Sundowns over a new contract had collapsed after the two parties could not agree on terms.
Chiefs, just like Raja, would not have needed to pay a transfer fee to get Domingo on their books ahead of next season.
Davids explained that getting Domingo out of the country was not a hard sell considering he’d played in Portugal and Norway before.
“Haashim always had ambitions to play overseas again. We had many enquiries and offers locally and I discussed them with Haashim. We explored every market as Haashim was open minded about everything. When Raja came Haashim was excited and that’s what he wanted,” the former Bafana Bafana midfielder said.
Raja announced Domingo last week and he is now also likely to work with another South African in coach Fadlu Davids, who is expected to form part of Josef Zinnbauer’s backroom staff at the club.
“Haashim was received well when everything was signed – his social media exploded and I have no doubt he will do well with some of the coaches who know him from the Premier Soccer League.
I must add that Zinnbauer is happy to have signed a player of Haashim’s quality and is looking forward to working with him. This has opened the market in North Africa. We have until 31 August to do deals so you never know what’s going to happen. There could be more deals, I think,” concluded Davids.
