Jessica Motaung, the marketing director of Kaizer Chiefs, recently provided an update on the situation of veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
The 37-year-old shot-stopper’s contract expired at the end of June, and he was notably absent from the club’s pre-season trip to Turkey. This absence has led to widespread speculation that Khune may have played his last game for Amakhosi, signaling the end of an era for one of the club’s most iconic players.
Khune, who has been with Kaizer Chiefs for an impressive 25 years, has struggled to secure regular game time over the last couple of seasons. Despite this, he remains a beloved figure within the club and among its supporters. His absence from the pre-season squad raised concerns and curiosity about his future, especially given his significant contribution to the team over the years.
In an interview with iDiskiTimes, Motaung addressed these concerns, revealing that the club has been in ongoing discussions with Khune. She emphasized the deep bond that Khune shares with the club, describing him as “part of the family” and likening him to a little brother. This sentiment underscores the personal and professional ties that Khune has developed during his long tenure at the club.

Motaung assured fans that an official announcement regarding Khune’s future would be made in due course. She highlighted that the discussions are focused on exploring various opportunities for Khune within the organization, which could potentially include roles off the pitch. Given his experience and loyalty, it is likely that Khune will continue to be involved with Kaizer Chiefs in some capacity, even if he no longer dons the goalkeeper’s gloves on match days.
This update provides a sense of reassurance to fans, indicating that while Khune’s playing days with Chiefs may be over, his association with the club is far from concluded. The forthcoming announcement is eagerly anticipated, as it will shed light on the next chapter for both Khune and Kaizer Chiefs.
