Stellenbosch FC defender Fawaaz Basadien has expressed his interest in joining Kaizer Chiefs, according to his agent.
Basadien has informed both the club and coach Steve Barker of his desire to make the move to the Soweto giants.
This news comes on the heels of Stellenbosch losing two key players—captain Deano van Rooyen, who joined Orlando Pirates, and striker Iqraam Rayners, who signed with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Basadien’s interest in Kaizer Chiefs signals his ambition to take the next step in his career, especially following the departure of some of Stellies’ top talents. If a deal is reached, it could mark a significant addition to Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive options as they continue to strengthen their squad.
Kaizer Chiefs have been in prolonged discussions with Stellenbosch FC regarding the potential transfer of left-back Fawaaz Basadien. Despite these talks, it initially seemed that Chiefs had shifted their focus to Riaan Hanamub, the Namibian international left-back currently with AmaZulu, as negotiations for Basadien appeared to stall.
The situation took a new turn after Stellenbosch reluctantly sold their captain, Deano van Rooyen, to Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns triggered the release clause for striker Iqraam Rayners. Basadien’s agent, Basia Michaels, has suggested that it would be fair for Stellenbosch to also consider agreeing to terms with Chiefs for Basadien, especially in light of these high-profile departures.
“But life isn’t fair unfortunately and also timing is everything. However, this is something that we are still actively pursuing although time might not be on our side, but we are working at it,” she explained to the public broadcaster.
While not necessarily forcing his way out of the club, remaining part of the squad in the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup fixtures recently, Basadien has expressed a desire to move to Naturena before the close of the window on 20 September.
“Fawaaz has let the coach [Barker] and the Stellies management know that this is an opportunity he wants to pursue. I can’t speak about the happiness of staying – we have to cross that bridge, if we unfortunately get there, but we can all admit that Fawaaz has been a consummate professional scoring two goals in two games,” added Michaels.
Stellies will again be in action this weekend as they face eSwatini outfit Nsingizini Hotspurs for the second leg of their Confederation Cup preliminary round encounter.
They then travel to Sundowns for the first leg of their MTN8 semi-finals on Wednesday and it’s expected Basadien will continue to feature.
