Late Chivaviro Goal Rescues a Point for Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy, courtesy of Ranga Chivaviro’s stoppage-time equalizer at Mbombela Stadium on a scorching afternoon.
TS Galaxy entered the match in fine form, unbeaten in their last four matches, while Chiefs were desperate to end a two-match winless streak. The game started with both teams showing attacking intent. Chiefs nearly took the lead early when Mduduzi Shabalala set up Ashley du Preez, but the forward squandered the opportunity.
Galaxy grew into the game and made their pressure count in the 35th minute. Chiefs’ failure to clear their lines allowed Sphiwe Mahlangu to deliver a pinpoint cross, which Samunkelo Kabini calmly converted to put the Rockets 1-0 ahead. Chiefs struggled to respond, and Galaxy continued to threaten with set-pieces, taking their lead into halftime.
In the second half, Chiefs upped the tempo as they chased an equalizer. However, Galaxy’s defense, led by goalkeeper Ira Tape, remained resolute. Chiefs suffered a setback when defender Rushwin Dortley was forced off injured in the 67th minute, replaced by Happy Mashiane.
Galaxy came close to doubling their lead when Phuso Dithejane found himself through on goal, but Chiefs’ goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma raced off his line to deny him.
With time running out, Chiefs mounted relentless pressure. Their persistence finally paid off in the 96th minute when Ranga Chivaviro latched onto a loose ball in the box and fired past Tape to level the scores.
The result leaves Chiefs with much to improve on, but their fighting spirit offers a glimmer of hope. TS Galaxy, meanwhile, will feel hard done by after coming so close to securing all three points.
