Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr has confirmed the club’s interest in Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi. Speaking on Radio 2000 with Thabiso Mosia, Motaung Jr revealed that Chiefs have made official offers for Velebayi, who has been on their radar for some time.
Velebayi, who has shown promising talent in his breakthrough season with Spurs, played around 13 games and was notably featured in the 2024 COSAFA Cup. Motaung Jr highlighted Velebayi’s potential and expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of bringing him to Chiefs.
“We did make an official offer to Cape Town Spurs; we had engagements with them, and of course, Spurs price their players the way they see fit. It has to make sense on both ends,” Motaung Jr explained.
Addressing recent controversy, Motaung Jr also refuted claims made by Spurs CEO Alex Efstathiou. Efstathiou alleged that Chiefs had approached Velebayi and his family inappropriately to pressure Spurs into selling the player. Motaung Jr clarified that Chiefs had not engaged directly with Velebayi or his family and emphasized the club’s commitment to professionalism.
“One thing we also want to put out there is that we never spoke to the player and his parents; that’s a misconception because we always pride ourselves on being professional,” Motaung Jr said. He added that he had a subsequent conversation with Efstathiou to address and clarify the miscommunication, which resulted in an apology from the Spurs CEO.
With the transfer deadline approaching, the future of Asanele Velebayi remains uncertain. Whether he will join Chiefs or stay with Cape Town Spurs will depend on ongoing negotiations and the resolution of the transfer discussions.
