Kaizer Chiefs to Explore New Roles for Veteran Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune
Kaizer Chiefs’ marketing director, Jessica Motaung, has confirmed that the club is exploring new opportunities for 37-year-old goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, whose contract expired at the end of the last season. Khune’s playing days with the team are reportedly over, but the club is eager to retain his involvement in a different capacity.
In an interview with Thabo Mosia on Radio 2000, Motaung revealed that the club had recently offered Khune a new contract, which he rejected. The offer included a position in the club’s marketing department. Motaung emphasized that while Khune’s contributions as a player are no longer part of the club’s plans, his value to the organization remains significant.
“We are in discussions about the role that Khune can play moving forward,” Motaung said. “We are exploring various options and are excited about the possibilities. We have been researching ambassadorial roles for retired players in the UK and are keen to find a meaningful role for him within the Chiefs family.”
Motaung also highlighted that the club had anticipated this transition, noting the strategic signing of Fiacre Ntwari as part of their long-term planning. “Itu has been a valuable member of our team, and we want to ensure that his transition is handled with the respect and recognition he deserves,” she added.
As the club continues to finalize details, Motaung expressed optimism about finding an exciting new role for Khune that will allow him to contribute to the Kaizer Chiefs in a different, yet impactful, way.
