Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly made contact with Cape Town Spurs to discuss the possible transfer of winger Asanele Velebayi
Despite Cape Town Spurs’ relegation last season, 21-year-old winger Asanele Velebayi featured prominently and earned a Bafana Bafana call-up for the recent COSAFA Cup under coach Helman Mkhalele. Kaizer Chiefs are eager to bolster coach Nasreddine Nabi’s squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
They have already secured goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy and left-back Bongani Sam from Orlando Pirates. The potential addition of Velebayi would further enhance their squad depth and attacking prowess.
Spurs also announced on Thursday that the Soweto giants had agreed a fee to sign centre-back Rushwin Dortley – a deal the public broadcaster understands is still subject to the player agreeing personal terms.
Both Spurs and Chiefs are keeping a tight lid on negotiations behind the scenes, just as they did with discussions around Dortley, who was wanted by rivals SuperSport United soon after The Urban Warriors’ return to the second tier was confirmed in May.
Velebayi managed 24 appearances across all competitions in what was his breakthrough season, having been promoted from the club’s youth academy in October last year.
Chiefs see the player as a prospect that can mature under Tunisian mentor Nabi, and the club is expected to table an offer for Velebayi once Spurs agree to sell yet another player as the look to cash in before the window closes late next month.
