Gavin Hunt, the current head coach of SuperSport United, reflects on his time at Kaizer Chiefs with a tinge of regret. Hunt, who took over from Ernst Middendorp in September 2020, had a mixed tenure at Chiefs.
While he led the team to their first-ever CAF Champions League semi-final, domestic results were inconsistent with only 12 wins, 17 draws, and 15 losses in 44 matches. This led to his departure, and he was replaced by interim coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard.

Hunt’s stint at Chippa United was short-lived due to the club’s quick trigger on firing coaches. Now at SuperSport United, he still laments his exit from Chiefs, feeling it was premature and denied him the opportunity to see his Champions League strategy through.
Expressing his disappointment, Hunt said, “Chiefs was fantastic, I got to the semi-finals, and I got fired. So I could not take the team to the final. That was a real disappointment for me, but it is something that will live with me for the rest of my life, but it is what it is.”

Recently, Hunt attended his graduation ceremony at SAFA House where he received his CAF A Diploma Coaching Course qualification along with 25 other coaches. He emphasized the importance of such courses in South Africa, stating, “I think in South Africa we need to have this more because I think there is a huge lack of knowledge in the country…the more and more these courses can be done, I think the better for South African football in the long run.”
