Chiefs respond to City of Joburg’s ‘disappointing’ tweet

In what has turned out to be a truly bizarre story, the City of Joburg trolled Chiefs in clear favour of Orlando Pirates despite the fact that Amakhosi claimed a memorable win in the Soweto derby this past weekend.

Yet, for one reason or another, the municipality posted an image with a Chiefs jersey peering out of a dustbin. The post included a caption that said: “Now that we’ve recovered from the weekend that was, remember to throw your litter in the bin.”

The embarrassed municipality then replied to say they were only joking: “Siyadlala nje, lighten up. Bunch of winners. You make Joburg great!”

However, a more formal apology was issued around midday on Tuesday.

“We sincerely apologise to @KaizerChiefs for the insensitive tweet posted earlier today,” a post read. “We meant no malice and the intended message was diluted with the choice of the meme that was used. We respect the Kaizer Chiefs brand and we congratulate them for winning the Derby.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Chiefs made a very clear point when they reminded the municipality that they were very much apart of the fabric of the city.

“Disappointing…we are part of the City of Joburg,” a social media post from Chiefs read in response to the since deleted tweet.

Previously the club’s Director of Football, Kaizer Motuang Jnr, also threw in a comment that simply said “disgusting.”

We sincerely apologise to @KaizerChiefs for the insensitive tweet posted earlier today. We meant no malice and the intended message was diluted with the choice of the meme that was used. We respect the Kaizer Chiefs brand and we congratulate them for winning the Derby ✌🏾

Despite this controversy, Chiefs fans do have a fair bit to be happy about after last weekend’s result.

CHIEFS ARE NOW FOURTH ON THE LEAGUE LOG

The DStv Premiership log certainly makes for interesting reading as the league goes into a two-month break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The new season of the DStv Premiership has already dished up plenty of excitement, but fans will now need to be patient as the competition heads into an extended break as a result of the Fifa World Cup.

Notably, Sundowns have bounced back from the disappointment of their MTN8 exit, and look handily placed five points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership table.

The six points and eight goals see them hold a five-point gap over second-placed Richards Bay. The Brazilians also have a game in hand over the Premiership newcomers who have been the surprise package of the season so far.

Meanwhile, SuperSport United missed the chance to go second after after a 1-1 draw with Swallows on Sunday afternoon, but they will be quite pleased to be in third place at this point.

As a result of Chiefs’ Soweto derby victory, Amakhosi have now leapfrogged the Buccaneers to lie fourth on the log, two points ahead of fifth-placed Pirates.
