Chiefs’ Interest in Basadien: What’s the Current Status?
In a recent interview on Radio 2000, Motaung Jr. of Kaizer Chiefs addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding Fawaaz Basadien, a prominent player for Stellenbosch FC. Motaung Jr. highlighted the transparency of their interest in Basadien, acknowledging that he has been on their radar for a few seasons. However, he emphasized that timing is crucial when it comes to player transfers, and sometimes, despite interest, circumstances may not align for a move to happen.
“We’re very transparent with Basadien because we’ve always had good positive relations with Stellenbosch,” Motaung Jr. explained. “Basadien has been on our radar for a couple of seasons now; I think sometimes it’s just an issue of timing whether things happen at the right time or not.”
He also underscored the professionalism of not publicly discussing players who belong to other clubs, noting that doing so could destabilize other teams. “It’s also tough to speak about players who belong to other clubs; it’s not professional to do that. We could be in the media talking about different candidates, and that kind of thing causes destabilization in other teams,” Motaung Jr. added.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Motaung Jr. reassured that Chiefs remain respectful of their opponents and the players linked with them. He noted, “We’re very respectful to our opponents; yes, we can’t run away from being linked with certain players. And a lot of the time, some of the players that are linked to us aren’t true.”
The Bigger Picture
The recent weeks have seen Chiefs struggling to finalize a move for Basadien, leading them to secure left-back Bradley Cross from Golden Arrows instead. Basadien has been a standout performer for Stellenbosch FC under coach Steve Barker, showcasing his abilities consistently since joining the team two seasons ago. His strong performances have earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Basadien’s impressive form and national team selection indicate his growing influence in South African football. The 27-year-old defender is set to make his debut for the national team in the Afcon qualifiers against South Sudan, scheduled for Tuesday.
What’s Next for Basadien and Chiefs?
Given the current situation, it seems unlikely that Basadien will make the move to Chiefs in the immediate future. Chiefs are well-stocked in the left-back position, with players like Edmilson Dove, Bongani Sam, and the newly signed Bradley Cross already on their roster.
As Basadien continues to shine with Stellenbosch FC and prepares for his national team debut, Chiefs will likely focus on their current squad and future transfer targets. For Basadien, the immediate goal is to perform well in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and build on his promising career.
The ongoing developments in the transfer market and Basadien’s performances on the field will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike as the season progresses.
