Kaizer Chiefs Face Setback as Assistant Coach Fernando da Cruz Departs for New Role
Kaizer Chiefs have encountered a setback ahead of the 2024/25 season opener with the unexpected departure of assistant coach Fernando da Cruz. The Frenchman has been granted leave to join the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) in a significant new role.
Da Cruz will be returning to Morocco to take part in a high-profile initiative with the FRMF. Two weeks ago, he received a lucrative offer to join the newly established OCP Group project, which aims to revolutionize football training and youth development in the country. The project, which was unveiled last month, is part of a strategic partnership designed to enhance the professionalization of football training centers and foster youth talent.
The FRMF’s offer, which includes collaboration with former national team coach and scout Fathi Jamal, proved to be a compelling opportunity for Da Cruz. As a result, Chiefs have agreed to his departure after receiving an official request from the FRMF. Da Cruz has now left South Africa to begin his new role, leaving Kaizer Chiefs with a key vacancy in their coaching staff.
With the new season approaching, Chiefs are set to kick off their campaign against Marumo Gallants at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein next Saturday at 17h30. The team will now be led by head coach Nasreddine Nabi as they prepare for their opening match without Da Cruz’s assistance.
