Kaizer Chiefs is facing a tough time in the coaching department, with worries swirling around interim coach Cavin Johnson’s future after their recent loss to Richards Bay FC. The team’s woes continued as they suffered their fourth defeat in five league matches, failing to find the net in four consecutive games, ultimately losing 1-0 to Richards Bay FC.
This poor form marks one of Chiefs’ worst runs since the beginning of the PSL era. In light of these struggles, the club held a crucial meeting this week to address various issues, including Johnson’s immediate future. A source close to the situation disclosed, “There was a meeting focused on the coach. The discussion revolved around whether to retain him or seek a replacement due to the poor results.”
Following deliberations, it was decided that Johnson would remain in charge until the end of the season. “With only a few games left, bringing in someone new would be futile. While it’s not guaranteed that Johnson will see out the season, it’s unlikely they’ll make a change at this stage,” the source added.
Chiefs find themselves with limited options for a new coach as assistant coach Dillon Sheppard may not be part of the setup next season. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr confirmed plans for a revamped coaching structure, stating, “Cavin stepped in temporarily, but we’re set on a different approach next season. Although our focus is on the remaining games, we’ve long been planning this transition.”
