Gavin Hunt is pointing fingers at inexperience once more as his team’s struggle to secure a win in the DStv Premiership extends to nine games. Matsatsantsa a Pitori suffered a 2-1 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, adding to their string of setbacks.
The year 2024 hasn’t been kind to the Tshwane-based squad, who have lost their grip on chasing a second-place finish. Despite a promising start to the season, SuperSport finds themselves trailing Stellenbosch FC by 11 points with only five games left to play.
“It’s disappointing because I feel we deserve more. Before their first goal, we had some excellent opportunities, but we couldn’t convert, and they capitalized on a lucky deflection,” lamented Hunt after the loss to Amakhosi.
“As I’ve mentioned previously, we have a young team, and they are learning the hard way. We must continue to have faith in them and provide guidance. However, physically, we’re often being overpowered in duels, which is a concern.”
“It’s very frustrating because we fielded seven Dsiki players. We have a young and thin squad, and while there may be initial excitement, it wears off eventually. But this is the path the club has chosen, and we’re learning from the tough experiences.”

United has faced a demanding season, participating in the Caf Confederation Cup while juggling domestic competitions. Hunt believes this has taken a toll on his players.
“We’ve been in a decent position throughout the season, but we’ve dropped off lately, and it’s understandable. Playing in Africa against three North African teams has been taxing for us.”
“Traveling extensively, even for our ‘home’ games in Polokwane, has been challenging. But these young players need to adapt and learn. With an experienced team, it would be easier, but we’re working with what we have.”
“Despite the challenges, the team’s attitude is commendable. We showed glimpses of quality against Chiefs on a difficult pitch.”

“Last year, losing key players like Patrick Maswanganyi and Thapelo Maseko has been a setback. If we had retained them, it would have been better. But now, we’re rebuilding and trying to form a new team.”
Hunt’s emphasis on the team’s youth and the challenges of maintaining consistency in performance reflect the uphill battle facing SuperSport United as they seek to turn their fortunes around in the remaining matches of the season.
