It’s been seven long years since Kaizer Chiefs have tasted silverware, but former player Abel Shongwe believes it’s time for the Amakhosi to turn the corner and make their mark on South African football once again.
In a recent interview with 45min, the former attacker expressed his support for current coach Arthur Zwane and called for the club’s management to do their part in helping the team reach its full potential.
“Kaizer Chiefs is not bad at the moment and I can see that Arthur is trying to get the best out of the club. I am just appealing to everyone to give the coach the support that he needs and I’m happy with what the chairman is doing to help the guy. I’m happy what the management is doing to help the coach,” said Shongwe.
The former star’s words of encouragement come after a determined 2-0 victory against Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup Last 32, giving fans hope that this could be the year Chiefs finally end their trophy drought.
Shongwe, who played a key role in bringing multiple titles to the club during his playing career, knows what it takes to be successful and believes that with the right support, the current generation of players can bring back the glory days to Kaizer Chiefs.

“We brought cups to Kaizer Chiefs and that’s what the club has always been known for. We are looking at the current generation of players with the hope that they will bring cups to the club. Let them (management) help Arthur by bringing good players to the club so that Chiefs could be an even better team. I am appealing to the supporters to get fully behind the coach,” he said.
With the club’s rich history and a passionate fan base, the stage is set for Kaizer Chiefs to make a strong push for silverware this season. Will the Amakhosi answer the call and bring the trophies back to Naturena? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain, Abel Shongwe and the Kaizer Chiefs faithful are ready to see their beloved club reclaim its place among South Africa’s top teams.
