Kaizer Chiefs’ interim coach, Cavin Johnson, highlighted Mfundo Vilakazi as the lone young gun in the team, amid queries about the presence of DStv Diski Challenge graduates. Johnson stressed the importance of utilizing these players based on the demands of each game.
“In some moments, it’s about making do with what we have at Kaizer Chiefs. If we don’t give these youngsters opportunities despite their performance in training, we limit ourselves,” Johnson remarked. “Each game presents a unique challenge, and we have to deploy them strategically.”
Johnson emphasized, “I believe Vilakazi is our only true youngster at the moment. Anyone older than 16 should be ready to step onto the field. So, having younger players doesn’t concern me; they should be prepared for the game.”

However, in a surprising twist, Vilakazi was absent from the matchday squad set to face Stellenbosch tonight, despite training with the first team just yesterday. Rumors suggest that Johnson decided to give Vilakazi a break, feeling he might be fatigued from his recent match against Chippa United for the Kaizer Chiefs reserve side.
Johnson’s decision hints at a cautious approach towards managing the young talent, ensuring they’re not overburdened too early in their careers. Fans can expect Vilakazi to bounce back in the following matches, recharged and ready to contribute to the team’s success.
