Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs’ influential figure, recently expressed his confidence in the club’s leadership group to identify areas for squad improvement in a statement. Motaung acknowledged the team’s “disappointing season” and emphasized the importance of supporting and developing the players.
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit in fourth place in the league, four points behind SuperSport United in third place and six points behind their Soweto rivals, Orlando Pirates. To make matters worse, Pirates recently knocked Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup, extending the club’s trophy drought to at least nine years.
Motaung assured fans and supporters that after the season, a thorough review would be conducted. “Of course, we’ll be doing a review of the support we need to provide.” In an interview with TimesLIVE, Motaung stated, “We never put them there to fail.” “We put them there to help them develop and grow, and when we conduct our end-of-season review, we will identify areas where we need to bolster and offer support.”
Recognizing the club’s challenges this season, Motaung emphasized the importance of learning from these experiences. “We’re also learning from the challenges that have occurred this season, and we’re determined to improve the assistance and value we provide to both the staff and the players,” he said.
Motaung also emphasized the need for patience from fans as the club undergoes a rebuilding phase. He acknowledged that success does not come overnight, drawing a parallel with the famous adage that “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” According to Motaung, the club embarked on the season with a young coach, a young technical staff, and a fresh approach, fully aware that it would be a demanding journey.
“We knew that it was going to be tough. Winning the MTN8, the Nedbank Cup, or securing a place in the CAF Champions League would have been a blessing,” Motaung admitted. “However, when you start from scratch or rebuild, success takes time. It is a process, not an overnight or one-day accomplishment.”
Motaung highlighted the importance of consistency and gradual improvement, using the example of Mamelodi Sundowns and other successful teams. Rather than completely revamping their squads, these teams focus on augmenting their existing strengths. Kaizer Chiefs, on the other hand, places emphasis on nurturing the experience of its young players.
Looking ahead to the next season, Motaung stated that the club intends to strengthen the squad and address the challenges encountered this season. He emphasized that football is a never-ending journey and that Kaizer Chiefs’ 53-year success provides them with the experience and direction they need for the future.
While Motaung admitted that the current season had been disappointing, he saw it as a necessary part of the rebuilding process. The experiences gained by the coaches and players, especially the young talents, will be valuable assets in the future. Motaung assured the club’s ardent supporters that the lessons learned this season will contribute to Kaizer Chiefs’ brighter future.
