Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the departure of head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, effective immediately. The decision was confirmed by club chairman Thlopie Motsepe during a press conference on Tuesday.
Mngqithi’s departure comes because the team has not been playing well lately. With the team failing to win any of their CAF Champions League group stage matches. Domestically, Sundowns remain top of the league table with 21 points, despite a recent loss.
The Brazilians have been struggling to find consistency, and the pressure has been mounting on Mngqithi. Despite having a talented squad, the team has failed to live up to expectations, and the chairman has decided to make a change.
Miguel Cardoso, formerly of Esperance, has been appointed as Mngqithi’s replacement. Cardoso brings a wealth of experience, having coached in various leagues across Africa and Europe.
Steve Komphela and Kenney Mweene will continue in their roles within the technical team, providing stability and continuity. The duo has been instrumental in shaping the team’s strategy and will work closely with Cardoso to ensure a smooth transition.
Chairman Motsepe emphasized the need for high standards, stating, “Our supporters deserve better, and we have not met those expectations recently. We believe that Miguel Cardoso has the expertise and experience to take our team to the next level.”
