Kaizer Chiefs are making waves in the transfer market this winter, with their sights set on securing Bafana Bafana midfield maestro Grant Margeman from SuperSport United.
As the club looks to bolster its midfield options, Margeman has emerged as a top priority for Amakhosi, and they are prepared to test SuperSport United’s resolve with a tempting offer.
Chiefs’ Quest for Midfield Reinforcement
SoccerLaduma reports that Chiefs have made the signing of the 26-year-old Grant Margeman a central part of their transfer strategy. Margeman, known for his compact and dynamic play, has been a standout performer in the DStv Premiership, showcasing his reliability and skill. Over the past two seasons, he has missed just six matches for SuperSport United, underscoring his importance to the team and his durability on the pitch.

A source close to the negotiations confirmed Chiefs’ interest, stating, “Grant (Margeman) is one of the midfielders they have been monitoring. They have actually inquired about him from SuperSport. It’s still early to say whether the talks have begun or not, but interest is there and they have been monitoring him.” The insider also mentioned that Chiefs are actively working on creating space within the squad to accommodate Margeman, including plans to loan out some of their existing midfielders.
A Long-Standing Interest
Chiefs’ interest in Margeman is not new. The club has been watching his development since his loan spell with Matsatsantsa from Sundowns in 2022. Margeman’s consistent performances and ability to control the midfield have made him a prime target for Amakhosi, who are keen to add quality and depth to their midfield lineup.
Thabo Cele: A Remote Possibility
While Margeman remains the primary focus, Kaizer Chiefs have also considered other options, including Thabo Cele. The 27-year-old midfielder has expressed openness to a return to the PSL, despite his ambitions of climbing the European football ladder. Cele, currently with Russian outfit Fakel Voronezh, has faced challenges abroad, prompting speculation about a potential move back to South Africa.

“It is always possible [to move to the PSL], especially when the transfer window is open,” said Cele during the COSAFA Cup in Durban. “And I won’t lie, it’s something that you consider because sometimes you find it tough [abroad], and you think about all other things.” Last year, Cele attracted interest from several clubs, including Sekhukhune, AS FAR Rabat, AmaZulu, and St Louis City. Ironically, Cele has been viewed as a long-term replacement for Njabulo Blom, who joined St Louis at the end of 2022.
Chiefs’ Midfield Overhaul
Kaizer Chiefs are not stopping at just Margeman. The club has been actively reshuffling its squad, loaning out players and making strategic signings to ensure they are competitive in the upcoming season. The potential addition of Margeman is seen as a critical move to enhance the team’s midfield strength and overall performance.
