Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has praised Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, applauding his growth and recognition on the global stage.
Khune, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s greatest goalkeepers, mentored Williams for years as they vied for the national team’s number one jersey. Since taking over from Khune after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, Williams has cemented his place as South Africa’s first-choice goalkeeper. His career has reached new heights since joining Mamelodi Sundowns from SuperSport United.
“He’s a great guy on and off the field—hard-working and always eager to learn,” Khune said about Williams when asked about constant comparisons between the two. “I spent many years with him competing for the Bafana number one jersey, and he always showed me respect and listened to the advice I gave him.”
Williams recently achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first goalkeeper since Khune to win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Footballer of the Season award. He was also nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Yachine Trophy, finishing ninth in a category won by Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez.

Khune expressed pride in Williams’ accomplishments. “He’s now being recognised worldwide, at the Ballon d’Or. I think he deserves it. He worked hard for it. As for the talk that he was robbed? He was competing with the best in the world,” Khune said.
The Chiefs veteran acknowledged that Williams’ performances at AFCON, along with his dominance in the PSL with Sundowns, were remarkable but added that global awards also consider achievements in competitions like the World Cup and UEFA Champions League.
“In Africa, if it were the CAF Awards, I’d have given it to him because of how well he performed. He’s done exceptionally for both Bafana and Sundowns. But on the world stage, he’s up against players from top leagues and competitions,” Khune explained.
Khune encouraged Williams to stay focused. “They know who Ronwen Williams is worldwide. I think he will be back at the Ballon d’Or awards and will continue to represent South Africa with distinction.”
