Is Yusuf Maart Past His Prime at Kaizer Chiefs?
Kaizer Chiefs fans are never shy about voicing their opinions, and the 2024/25 season has been no exception. One player under scrutiny is midfielder Yusuf Maart, with some questioning whether the 29-year-old is “past his sell-by date.” Despite being a mainstay in Nasreddine Nabi’s midfield, partnering with Sibongiseni Mthethwa, doubts persist about Maart’s ability to meet Chiefs’ high expectations.
Maart joined Amakhosi in 2022 as a marquee signing from Sekhukhune United, bringing a reputation for hard work, leadership, and versatility. Over time, he has delivered solid performances, particularly in his role as a box-to-box midfielder. However, recent displays, such as the 2-2 draw with Royal AM, have raised questions about his consistency. Chiefs’ fanbase, known for its demand for excellence, has begun to wonder if Maart’s influence on the team is waning.
The club’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements only adds fuel to the speculation. Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly interested in Tanzanian playmaker Feisal Salum and South African enforcer Thabo Cele. Both players offer specialized skills—Salum’s attacking flair and Cele’s defensive steel—that could shift the dynamics of Chiefs’ midfield. If both were to join, it might signal a gradual phasing out of Maart, especially as Chiefs continue to rejuvenate their squad with younger talent.
However, it’s too soon to write Maart off entirely. His leadership and experience remain vital, particularly in a team undergoing significant transition under coach Nabi. While younger alternatives may be explored, Maart’s adaptability could see him thrive in a more specialized role or as a squad player.
For now, Yusuf Maart’s future at Kaizer Chiefs remains uncertain. Whether he silences his critics or makes way for new talent, only time—and his performances—will tell.
