Kaizer Chiefs have faced a recurring challenge when signing players from Mamelodi Sundowns. Despite the high hopes, many of these players have struggled to perform at Chiefs, leading fans to believe in a “Sundowns to Chiefs curse.” However, the arrival of Gastón Sirino could mark a change, as he aims to break this streak and bring success to the club.
In the past, several big-name players from Sundowns joined Chiefs but failed to live up to expectations:
- Khama Billiat: After achieving great success at Sundowns, where he won multiple titles, Billiat joined Chiefs in 2018. Sadly, injuries and inconsistent form saw him score only 17 goals in 97 appearances, and he left the club in 2022 after refusing to renew his contract.
- Katlego Mphela: Known as one of the top strikers in the league, Mphela joined Chiefs in 2014 with high expectations. Unfortunately, he managed only three goals in 15 games before being released in 2016.
- Leonardo Castro: Castro, another Sundowns star, arrived at Chiefs in 2017. But injuries hindered his progress, and despite flashes of promise, he couldn’t consistently deliver during his four years with the club.
- Ramahlwe Mphahlele: Joining Chiefs in 2016 after a successful stint with Sundowns, Mphahlele was a key defender but was often injured. He never won a trophy with Chiefs and left in 2022.
These examples show the difficulty many Sundowns players have had in thriving at Chiefs. However, Sirino seems determined to change this. With his experience, creativity, and ability to unlock defenses, he is already showing early signs of fitting in well with the team.
Another promising factor is Sirino’s partnership with Ranga Chivaviro, who has already scored three goals in four games this season. This connection is giving Chiefs fans hope that Sirino could be the missing piece in the team’s attacking puzzle.
While there is still pressure, Sirino’s early performances suggest he might succeed where others have struggled. If he continues to build on this form, Sirino could be the player to finally break the so-called curse and help Chiefs return to their winning ways. Fans are hopeful that his skills and leadership will bring the success they have been waiting for.
