Majoro Urges Kaizer Chiefs to Emulate Sundowns’ Success Under Pitso Mosimane
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has advised his old club to draw inspiration from the transformative period that Mamelodi Sundowns experienced under Pitso Mosimane. As the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season approaches, Chiefs are embarking on a new chapter under the guidance of coach Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian tactician has been entrusted with the task of steering the Soweto giants back to their glory days—a period of success that has eluded them for the past nine seasons.
Majoro’s comments come at a time when Chiefs supporters are eager for a turnaround, reminiscent of the one achieved by Sundowns when Mosimane took the helm in December 2012. At that time, Sundowns were struggling under Johan Neeskens, but Mosimane’s appointment marked a turning point. Within one and a half seasons, Mosimane led Sundowns to their first title in the 2013/14 season, and the club has since enjoyed unparalleled success.
Sundowns’ dominance under Mosimane has been remarkable, with the club clinching seven consecutive Betway Premiership titles. Despite Mosimane’s departure in 2020, his influence continues to shape Sundowns’ success. Majoro believes that Chiefs can learn valuable lessons from this era of Sundowns’ history.
“I think we can take a step back and see what Sundowns did during the time of coach Pitso Mosimane,” Majoro told FARPost. “They went on a building phase; it took Pitso one and a half seasons before Sundowns could be the Sundowns we know.”
Majoro’s insight underscores the importance of patience and strategic planning in achieving footballing success. He stresses that Kaizer Chiefs will need to undergo a similar phase of development if they are to return to their former glory. “Kaizer Chiefs also has to undergo that stage because there are no shortcuts in football. You need a coach that will be with you within a certain period of time,” he said.
The former striker highlighted that Nabi, as a new coach, will need time to assemble a team capable of competing at the highest level. This includes identifying and acquiring players who can fill crucial positions and contribute to the team’s success. Majoro is hopeful that the recent signings by Chiefs will make a positive impact, but he remains realistic about the time it will take to see significant changes.
“I’m expecting to see a bit of change with the players that they have signed,” Majoro noted. “I understand that supporters expect instant results. We want Kaizer Chiefs to come back; we want the glory days to come back. It’s going to take time for that to happen.”
