Monday marked the start of a new chapter at the Kaizer Chiefs Village as players gathered to meet the incoming assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz and goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi for the first time. The meeting, however, saw several key players absent.
Da Cruz, who arrived on Sunday, wasted no time in sharing the soon-to-be-announced head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s vision for the upcoming 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. He emphasized the importance of a winning mentality, discipline, and maintaining high standards.
Mzoughi, known for his high energy, brought a boost of enthusiasm to the training session. Strength and conditioning coach Muzi Maluleke led the initial fitness tests, and Mzoughi’s positive impact on the goalkeeping squad was evident.
Around 28 players attended the session, but notable absentees included Siyethemba Sithebe, Njabulo Ngcobo, Keagan Dolly, and Sifiso Hlanti. Their contracts are set to expire at the end of June, adding uncertainty to the squad’s composition for the new season. Ngcobo has already signed with Sekhukhune United.
Despite the absences, there was a positive note as legendary goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune attended the session, showing his ongoing commitment to the club even though his contract is also ending next week. Dillon Sheppard, a familiar face at the Chiefs, was present to help the new coaches settle in.
Tebogo Potsane and George Matlou are still recovering from injuries, and Edmilson Dove is currently away on national duty with Mozambique for the COSAFA Cup. Edson Castillo and Jasond Gonzalez were also not present. Gonzalez, who joined on a one-year deal, is likely not to have his contract renewed.
With Nasreddine Nabi’s arrival imminent, fans are eagerly looking forward to a new era in the history of Kaizer Chiefs.
