A disturbing incident of alleged racial abuse has tainted the Moroccan Botola Pro League, with Wydad AC coach Rulani Mokwena revealing he was subjected to racist remarks during yesterday’s 2-2 draw against IR Tanger.
Mokwena, who joined Wydad AC ithis season, expressed his disappointment and frustration, stating, “I don’t think I came to Morocco to be racially abused. It’s not right.” The South African coach praised his staff for rallying around him, saying, “I want to thank my staff, the moment they heard that they came to my defence and I want to thank my staff because it shows how united and together we are.”
This incident raises concerns about racism in Moroccan football, particularly as the country is in bid to prepares to host major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
One fan said “It’s also puzzling that lots of penalties have been given against Wydad. There’s a campaign going on against Rhulani”. Waydad AC are in position 5 in the log after 10 games and have 15 points, they have conceded seven penalties.
Wydad AC, one of Morocco’s top clubs, has been at the forefront of continental competitions, winning the CAF Champions League in 2017. Mokwena’s experience and expertise have been instrumental in shaping the team’s success since his arrival.
The alleged racial abuse of Mokwena has sparked outrage, with many calling for swift action against the perpetrators. Moroccan football authorities must take immediate measures to address this incident and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all players, coaches, and staff.
