With Khama Billiat not set to play again this season, it is looking increasingly more likely that he won’t kick a ball again for Kaizer Chiefs.
Billiat’s deal at Chiefs is set to expire at the end of the current season, and although there has been no official communication either from club or player, he seems to be on his way out.
BILLIAT JOINED CHIEFS FROM SUNDOWNS
The Zimbabwean international joined Chiefs from rivals Mamelodi Sundowns on a free transfer a few seasons back, over much fanfare. Having had a very successful spell with the Brazilians at the peak of his powers, a spell that saw him win the CAF Champions League, several league titles and domestic titles as well as play in the FIFA Club World Cup, Billiat was undoubtedly a massive coup for the Glamour Boys.
What made the signing evening bigger for Chiefs is the fact that they had reportedly thwarted some of the biggest clubs from North Africa, as well as Europe for Billiat’s services. The expectation was that he would be a key component in leading the club back to its former glory days, but that has not proven to be the case during his time at the club.
YET TO WIN SILVERWARE AT THE CLUB
The closest Billiat has come to winning silverware with Chiefs has been the 2019/2020 season, where they finished runners up on the last day to Sundowns. He was also part of the Chiefs squad that lost to then first division side TS Galaxy in the 2019 Nedbank Cup final the season before. It is now thought that, that will be as good as it gets for the former Zimbabwe international at Amakhosi.
SUPERSPORT INTERESTED?
That is because, Soccer-Laduma reports that his former coach at Chiefs, Gavin Hunt is interested in luring the player to his current club, SuperSport United. The biggest stumbling block, however, is thought to be his salary at Amakhosi, unsurprisingly. Billiat is thought to be earning north of R500 000 am month at the moment and will almost certainly have to lower that salary if he is to join any other team in the local league.
Alternatives for Billiat could be a move to the oil rich region of the Middle East, should he not come to an agreement with Chiefs.
