A former Kaizer Chiefs star has been embroiled in a match-fixing scandal abroad, according to shock reports doing the rounds!
Midfielder Kearyn Baccus signed for Chiefs ahead of the the 2019/20 and had a stellar impact for the club.
Baccus was born in Durban, South Africa, but grew up in Australia, a country he has grown to call home. So impressive was his debut season, that football fans in the country were calling for his possible inclusion in the Bafana Bafana set up. An injury in the middle of that campaign seemed to halt his progress, however, and he never looked the same in a Chiefs jersey.
BACCUS LEFT CHIEFS IN 2022
He also played a role the next season as Chiefs managed to get themselves in the CAF Champions League final. The next season under Stuart Baxter would prove to be his last, as Baccus formed part of a large exodus. After leaving Amakhosi, the player returned home to Australia, where he joined Macarthur FC in 2022.
Now according to Associated Press Baccus as well as other Macarthur players have been implicated in a match-fixing scandal.
“Midfielder Kearyn Baccus appeared in court Thursday to face charges relating to an illegal betting plot. This to receive yellow cards during A-League matches in return for payment. He was arrested on May 17 along with team captain Ulises Davila and teammate Clayton Lewis. All three were granted bail and were suspended by Football Australia under its code of conduct regulations. Documents produced in Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday revealed that two other players are accused of participating in a criminal group.” Wrote the publication.
Furthermore, Football Australia issued a statement on the situation involving Baccus.
IN MATCH-FIXING SCANDAL
“Football Australia acknowledges the enquiries regarding the potential involvement of other Macarthur FC players in the betting allegations .“It is important to note that (the player mentioned Baccus) is not regarded as a suspect and is currently not under investigation. the statement said.
It remains to be seen what role Baccus played in this scandal if he is not regarded as a suspect.
