Bafana Bafana team has been drawn against their opponents for the upcoming 2024 COSAFA Cup following the group stage draw on Friday. The draw, which was streamed live on COSAFA’s social media channels, took place in Johannesburg. The 23rd edition of the competition will be hosted in South Africa from Wednesday, June 26, to Sunday, July 7.
COSAFA will announce kickoff times and the venue for this year’s edition.
Last year’s edition was held at the King Zwelithini Stadium in KZN and was won by Zambia’s Chipolopolo, who successfully defended their 2022 title.
In 2023, Bafana coach Hugo Broos was notably absent, leading SAFA to appoint Jwaneng Galaxy coach Morena Ramoreboli as a stand-in. Under Ramoreboli’s guidance, the national team secured third place by defeating Malawi 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Twelve (12) nations will compete, all aiming for the prestigious Southern African trophy, Madagascar and Mauritius are the two COSAFA nations who have opted not to compete the in the tournament.
Hosts South Africa, last year’s champions Zambia, and Angola were the seeded teams. The teams were divided into three groups of four, with the three group winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semi-finals.
South Africa, five-time COSAFA Cup winners, were placed in Group A alongside neighboring countries Mozambique, Eswatini, and Botswana.
In Group B, the most successful team in COSAFA Cup history, Zambia, will face Comoros, Zimbabwe, and one more team yet to be confirmed. Group C includes Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, and Seychelles.
