As the curtain draws to a close on Arthur Zwane’s first season as head coach of the PSL team, Kaizer Chiefs, it is time to evaluate his performance. The 49-year-old, nicknamed 10111, has faced criticism from fans and legends of the club alike throughout the campaign. Despite this, he has managed to guide the team to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup and is also in contention for the runners-up spot in the PSL.
As an unproven coach, Zwane is under constant pressure to prove himself, which can lead to him making mistakes. This pressure is exacerbated by the fact that Chiefs supporters are known for their impatience, and the only way for 10111 to gain their trust is by winning trophies. Additionally, his loyalty to the club’s owners, the Motaungs, may make it difficult for him to question or criticize their decisions, leading to him becoming a ‘Yes Man’ to management.
In contrast, successful coaches at the club in the PSL era, such as Muhsin Ertugral and Stuart Baxter, were strong-willed and unafraid to question or criticize management when necessary. Despite the risks associated with appointing an unproven coach, Chiefs took a gamble on Zwane, and it remains to be seen whether this decision will pay off in the long run.
