In a recent press conference, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane addressed the team’s ongoing struggles in converting scoring opportunities and shed light on the possibility of reinforcing their striking department.
The Chiefs implemented a new strategy in the second half of the season with the acquisition of Christian Saile Basomboli from Nchanga Rangers in January.
Basomboli made an immediate impact in his initial appearances, earning a regular spot alongside Ashley Du Preez while Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana was relegated to the bench. Bimenyimana carried the weight of Amakhosi’s attacking responsibilities during the first round of the season, but his goal-scoring prowess dwindled in the second half.
Following their elimination by Pirates in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, Zwane was asked whether the club would seek another striker in the transfer market, particularly due to concerns regarding the form of the Congolese forward, who missed crucial chances against the Buccaneers. Zwane responded, “Not really. Look, we’ll always want to strengthen, and if you analyze the chances we created on Saturday, Saile was in the right position. ‘Ash’ (Ashley Du Preez) created space for him to exploit, and he did exploit it. However, he couldn’t find the target, which is an aspect we can work on.”
Zwane emphasized the importance of having players who understand the team’s expectations, stating, “It’s better to have a player on the field who comprehends what you expect from him. Saile was in the right area at the right time. Unfortunately, we couldn’t convert. We cannot solely blame him because it’s the nature of football; you win some, lose some, and sometimes you capitalize on those opportunities, while other times you don’t. Failing to convert chances ultimately comes at a cost.”
Zwane acknowledged that the team’s inability to take advantage of scoring opportunities is the primary reason they did not secure a spot in the Nedbank Cup final. Nevertheless, he expressed satisfaction with the effort and commitment displayed by his players, saying, “That’s why we find ourselves in this situation, knocked out of the cup. However, I cannot fault the players’ dedication and perseverance. They gave their best, leaving nothing on the field, and I am proud of them.”
Despite their recent setbacks, Kaizer Chiefs remains determined to address their striking challenges through internal improvement and training. Zwane’s assessment of the situation exemplifies the team’s commitment to both individual player development and the collective effort required to achieve success.
