African clubs are growing in stature on the global stage, which has increased the value of players who play in Africa.
Here we look at the top five African clubs in terms of the value of their squad.
The figures provided are estimates of the player market value.
- Pyramids – Egypt – R302 million
The first of three Egyptian behemoths on this list, and the youngest club to make the top five.
Pyramids was founded in 2008 and spent much of its existence outside of the top flight until 2018, when they received a cash injection from a new owner who also renamed the club, which was previously known as Al Assiouty Sport.
Despite their spending, the club has yet to win a major trophy in Egypt or on the continent, despite competing in a Caf Confederation Cup final.
- Orlando Pirates – South Africa – R303 million
Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa’s “big three,” is a club with a long history of domestic and continental success.
They have quietly assembled the continent’s fourth most valuable squad, though it has yet to bear fruit in the form of silverware.
According to market value estimates, Bafana Bafana defender Thulani Hlatshwayo and Namibian winger Deon Hotto are the club’s joint most valuable players.
- Zamalek – Egypt – R361 million
The reigning Egyptian Premier League champions have existed under various names since 1911, but are now known as Zamalek around the world.
The club’s arch-rivals, Ah-Ahly, have had tremendous success on the continent, winning the Caf Champions League five times.
Right now, Zamalek’s prized asset is Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki.
- Mamelodi Sundowns – South Africa – R394 million
Record-breaking Mamelodi Sundowns, the PSL champions, have the continent’s second-most valuable squad.
Sundowns, owned by the billionaire Motsepe family, has dominated South Africa’s top flight for the last five years.
Namibian striker Peter Shalulile is regarded as the team’s most valuable asset.
- Al Ahly – Egypt – R536 million
