Kaizer Chiefs’ Ashley Du Preez believes that if his team had found their scoring form earlier in the season, they would have given Mamelodi Sundowns a run for their money in the DStv Premiership title race. Sundowns secured their 13th and sixth consecutive league title with seven games to spare, leaving Chiefs to rue their missed opportunities earlier in the campaign.
Du Preez acknowledged that the team has been creating chances, but lamented their inability to convert them into goals. He suggested that the team needs to focus on finishing during training, saying, “When you create and don’t convert, that is when you need to look at it during the week at training. We have to do extra exercises on finishing. For me, I love creating chances, but we need to do better.”
Du Preez Recognizes Kaizer Chiefs’ Rebuilding Process
Despite the disappointment of falling behind in the title race, Du Preez recognized that Chiefs are a relatively new team that is still finding its footing. He joined the team this season and has contributed seven goals and five assists in 23 appearances.
“It is a new team, and we are finding ourselves, getting to know each other’s strengths now,” he said. “But Du Preez is still unhappy with his contribution so far and feels he could have given more to his new team. “I am not happy. I think we can do better. We need to find our feet and convert more chances.”
Looking ahead, Du Preez believes that Chiefs can still finish strongly and secure second place in the standings. The team is currently tied with SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates on 40 points after 24 matches, with Pirates holding a superior goal difference. Chiefs’ next match is against Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
