Stellenbosch FC has turned down Kaizer Chiefs’ R10 million offer for Fawaaz Basadien, raising questions about why PSL clubs are hesitant to do business with the Amakhosi.
Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie made it clear that the club is determined to keep Basadien, despite selling key players like Deano van Rooyen and Iqraam Rayners to other top teams.
45min understands that this rejection is part of a trend where PSL clubs seem to be avoiding deals with Chiefs. Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi voiced his frustration on SuperSport TV, hinting that other teams might be purposefully blocking Chiefs’ moves. Recent failed attempts to sign players like Elias Mokwana from Sekhukhune United and Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City add weight to this idea.

Stellenbosch’s refusal highlights their strict approach to player valuation. Earlier this year, they turned down a big offer from Saudi Arabian club Abha for Rayners, explaining that they couldn’t find a replacement in time. This was revealed by former coach Pitso Mosimane in a radio interview, showing how serious the club is about maintaining their squad’s quality.
With Basadien having signed a four-year contract in February, Stellenbosch isn’t in a rush to sell, especially since there’s no buy-out clause. This makes negotiations tough for Chiefs. Although Basadien’s agent, Basia Michaels, has confirmed the player’s interest in joining Chiefs, the absence of a buy-out clause means Chiefs will have to get creative, possibly by offering players in exchange.
Chiefs have successfully dealt with Stellenbosch before, securing Ashley Du Preez and Zitha Kwinika by triggering their buy-out clauses. They also used the buy-out clause route to sign Sibongiseni Mthethwa last season. However, with no such option for Basadien, Chiefs have a challenging road ahead.
