Manqoba Mngqithi has shed light on Mamelodi Sundowns' player recruitment process, revealing the sole player he personally requested to sign.
The 52-year-old parted ways with Masandawana just months after being appointed head coach. Mngqithi assumed the role ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
On Tuesday, 10 December 2024, Sundowns announced at Chloorkop the appointment of Miguel Cardoso as the new head coach, replacing Mngqithi.
Former Golden Arrows coach Mngqithi was dismissed along with his assistant coach, Romain Folz, and goalkeeper coach, Wendell Robinson.
Manqoba Mngqithi was appointed as Sundowns' head coach following Rulani Mokwena's dismissal in the off-season. After their stint as co-coaches, Mngqithi transitioned to the role of senior coach under Mokwena's leadership.
Mngqithi Reveals Iqraam Rayners as His Only Signing at Sundowns
Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW, Mngqithi revealed that Iqraam Rayners was the only player he signed at Sundowns.“I don’t want to come out on this platform and say I didn’t know anything . I’d be lying; I don’t want to lie,” Mngqithi said.“Yes, this initiative started before me. So when I got the opportunity, the only player that I personally requested from the club was Iqraam Rayners.
“That one is the player I personally requested, and I pushed. Fortunately, I got support from a lot of people in the club; that’s why it happened, and I appreciate that.”
The highly-rated forward made a high-profile switch from Stellenbosch FC to the Brazilians in August 2024.
