Venezuela’s quest for a historic World Cup qualification has thrust Kaizer Chiefs’ standout midfielder, Edson Castillo, into the spotlight of the South American nation’s mainstream media.
Despite not seeing any action in October, Castillo has once again secured a spot in the La Vinotinto squad for upcoming clashes against Ecuador on November 17 and Peru on November 22.
In October, Castillo was initially called up as a replacement for Jesus Bueno in matches against Brazil and Chile. However, this time around, he has earned his place in the original squad, signaling a noteworthy progression in his international career.
The attention from major Venezuelan publications is palpable. El Universal, a prominent Venezuelan newspaper, prominently featured Castillo in its headlines, emphasizing the absence of Jesus Bueno and Josef Martinez.
Another widely circulated daily, El Nacional, also underscored Castillo’s inclusion in the squad, further solidifying his status as a key player for the national team.
Castillo’s rise mirrors that of Jose Torrealba, showcasing the trend of Kaizer Chiefs’ players earning national team call-ups due to their stellar performances. With an impressive record of four goals in 14 appearances, Castillo has become a pivotal figure for both club and country.

Venezuela, currently occupying the fourth spot after four games, aims to secure one of the seven qualification spots available for the 10 South American countries. As the third-lowest ranked country in CONMEBOL, sitting at 49th in the world rankings, Venezuela stands as the sole South American nation providing opportunities for players in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
With the prospect of reaching their first-ever World Cup finals, Venezuela, fueled by emerging talents like Castillo, is poised for an exciting and historic journey in the world of international football.
