Ilyes Mzoughi the new Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper coach, landed in Johannesburg on Sunday evening, becoming the latest addition to the team’s revamped technical staff. The Mauritanian national team’s former goalkeeper coach will replace Rainer Dinkelacker, who returned to Germany after his contract expired.
Dinkelacker, who first joined Chiefs in 1999 with Muhsin Ertugral, played a crucial role in developing top goalkeepers like Itumeleng Khune, Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez, and Arthur Bartman. He left Chiefs after the 2012/13 season but returned at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season for a one-year stint.
Mzoughi is not the only new face at Chiefs. Frenchman Fernando Da Cruz, the incoming assistant coach, also arrived in Johannesburg on Sunday. Da Cruz flew in from Casablanca and landed at 7 PM. The 50-year-old Tunisian, who has had a distinguished coaching career with clubs across the Middle East and North Africa, brings a wealth of experience to the Chiefs.

Mzoughi’s appointment is a significant move for Chiefs. He will work under the soon-to-be-announced head coach, Nasreddine Nabi. The two share a strong professional relationship and respect for each other, promising a solid coaching partnership. Mzoughi’s main task will be to improve the performance of Chiefs’ goalkeepers, using his extensive experience from working with various top clubs in the Gulf region and North Africa.
As Chiefs gear up for the 2024/25 season, the addition of Mzoughi and Da Cruz indicates a clear intent to rebuild and strengthen the technical team. The squad will regroup on Monday at Naturena to begin their preparations for the new season. Chiefs are also expected to appoint a conditioning coach, video analyst, and a second assistant coach soon.
