In a surprising turn of events, Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly secured the signing of Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo, giving him a second chance after considering him in January.
Following an unsuccessful switch to the South African giants earlier this year, Castillo returned to his home country, Venezuela, and rejoined Monagas SC after a brief stint with Caracas FC.
During his time with Monagas SC, the 28-year-old midfielder has displayed his goal-scoring prowess, finding the back of the net three times in just five appearances. While he is capable of playing as a holding midfielder, his attacking contributions suggest he thrives in a more advanced midfield role.
As of June, Castillo still has 18 months remaining on his current contract. This signing comes amid the well-documented issues faced by Andile Jali at Mamelodi Sundowns, which appear to have left him without a place at Chloorkop, making the 33-year-old midfielder available on a free transfer.
However, there are two concerns that have been raised regarding Castillo’s acquisition. Firstly, his discipline has been questioned, and secondly, his age has raised some doubts among the decision-makers at Kaizer Chiefs. Reports from FARPost suggest a certain hesitance to bring him to Naturena due to these factors.
