Kaizer Chiefs striker Ashley Du Preez admits he needs to step up his game in front of the goal as his team gears up to face Richards Bay in the DStv Premiership on Sunday.
Du Preez scored twice in the recent Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, but aside from that, he’s been missing too many chances this year. “I know I can do better. I get plenty of opportunities in every game, but my last goal was in the derby,” Du Preez told Chiefs media.
The 26-year-old has scored only five goals this season for Chiefs, and four of those came in matches they lost. However, he tends to perform better against tougher opponents. Apart from the derby goals, he scored against Mamelodi Sundowns and MTN8. His only goal in a winning match was against Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarterfinals.
Du Preez hopes to add more goals against Richards Bay and secure three important points. “Richards Bay is struggling in the league, so we’re heading to Durban aiming for a win. We haven’t won in a while, so the team is eager for this game,” he added.

While Richards Bay fights to avoid relegation, Chiefs also have their own battle. They need to win to secure a spot in next season’s MTN8 tournament. With only seven games left this season, Chiefs are in eighth place, narrowly ahead of Golden Arrows on goal difference and just one point ahead of Chippa United and Polokwane City. Cavin Johnson’s team has won only one of their last eight games, scoring just three goals in the process.
