Siphosihle Nkambule calmly slotted the winning penalty. The penalty sent the University of Johannesburg into the Varsity Football 2023 final. The Orange Army will now play three consecutive varsity football finals.

Moreover, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will face off against the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football title on Thursday, 28 September, in Soweto.

UJ ultimately secured their spot in the final with a 6-5 victory in the penalty shoot-out. After the match ended goalless in regular time.

Subsequently, TUT emerged victorious in the second semi-final against the University of the Western Cape (UWC), clinching their final berth through a penalty shoot-out.

The UJ Soweto Stadium witnessed a strategic first half, with both teams, the Orange Army and the Eagles, opting for a cautious approach. The initial 45 minutes saw few scoring opportunities.

The second half showcased a more aggressive UJ side, with forward Siphosihle Nkambule missing crucial chances. NWU goalkeeper Kamogelo Matane played a stellar role, making exceptional saves and earning the Player of the Match award.

Reflecting on the match, UJ skipper Makoti Maselesele acknowledged a slow start. He expressed satisfaction in thwarting NWU’s advances and keeping a clean sheet in both encounters.

The stage is now set for an electrifying final as these two formidable teams vie for the prestigious title.
