Kennedy Mweene’s new role at Downs revealed

The league defender’s head coach Rhulani Mokwena has revealed the new role that has been given to the Zambian international goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene in the first team.

The goalkeeper was stripped off his number one spot by a Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango few years ago, and he further suffered from game time following the arrival of a 31 year old South African goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams at the beginning of this season.

According to coach Mokwena, Mweene is now going to be an assistant goalkeeper coach at Down’s first team.

Kennedy was on the bench as an interim goalkeeper coach when Mamelodi Sundowns beat Orlando Pirates on Saturday. This is after the coach Wendell Robinson got a red card in their last game against Sekhukhune United.

COACH RULANI REVEALS KENNEDY MWEENE’S ROLE

“He’s doubling up into a role that we envisage for him, his long term,” coach Mokwena told the media.

“For sure, but of course, he’s going to be doing his coaching badges very soon. He’s just applied for that.

“And it’s only that natural progression in life when you move particularly from playing and then you have the keen interest to be involved in coaching.

“And Kennedy has that. He’s been an incredible servant for this football club. He has been extremely incredible in South African football with an incredible experience.

“He has won Champions League, AFCON and so, there’s incredible benefits for the football club to inherit in a coaching capacity.

“Maybe fast-tracked a bit by the red card for coach Wendell for sure but the universe works in incredible ways.

“God works in incredible ways by giving people opportunities even when we deem ourselves not ready.

“But God says when I deem you ready and I choose you, you have to step up and respond to the calling and he did very well today.

“So, congratulations to him for winning his first match on the bench as a goalkeeper coach in the interim capacity. We want to thank him for his contribution today and thank him for assistance in the role that he played.”
