Anticipating the Introduction of VAR in the DStv Premiership: What Fans Need to Know

The implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in South Africa has been a hot topic of discussion for some time now, especially given the questionable decisions made in the DStv Premiership. However, the arrival of VAR has been delayed due to the lack of training of officials, according to Tebogo Motlanthe, the CEO of the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Motlanthe revealed that discussions with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA have centered around the training of officials before any implementation of VAR can take place. "We have trained so many people in this country to this point," he said in a press conference following the announcement of Hugo Broos' 35-man preliminary squad.

The SAFA CEO also explained that the testing of VAR in a friendly match was premature, given the lack of trained officials available to oversee the technology. He emphasized the importance of proper training before the roll-out of VAR can occur.

The delay in the arrival of VAR may be frustrating for some football fans, but it is important to ensure that officials are properly trained to use the technology before it is implemented. VAR has been a controversial addition to the sport in many countries, with some arguing that it takes away from the spontaneity of the game. However, others believe that it has the potential to improve the accuracy of refereeing decisions and ultimately enhance the overall quality of the sport.

Once officials in South Africa have been properly trained to use VAR, it will be interesting to see how its implementation will affect the DStv Premiership and football in the country as a whole. Regardless of the outcome, the arrival of VAR is sure to be a significant moment in the history of South African football.
