Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly identified another goalkeeper as a possible Itumeleng Khune replacement candidate!
Khune has been the number one goalkeeper at Chiefs for most of his time at the club, which began in 2004.
Over the years, Khune has been a stalwart for Chiefs, being their number one goalkeeper for well over a decade. In recent years, however, the 36-year-old has been plagued by both injuries and lack of form, which have since seen him dropped. With the club failing to find a regular goalkeeper to finally cement that position, they have often found themselves calling on their veteran goal minder time and time again.
That was the case at the end of last season, before Chiefs opted to give Brandon Petersen a chance to grow in the number one jersey this season. A combination of poor form and mental health issues then saw the former Bidvest Wits star back on the sidelines at the club, with Khune, again the go to man. This time around though, the former long-term Bafana Bafana number one did not show the form he was expected to. To further compound matters, he was recently suspended by the club and stripped off the captains armband for disciplinary reasons.
Now with Chiefs having already said Khune will retire at the end of the season, should he go with his own wishes, then he might have to play on elsewhere. With that being said, Amakhosi have reportedly made enquiry to Stellenbosch FC goalkeeper Sage Stephens as per Soccer-Laduma.
STEPHENS FOR CHIEFS?
“According to reliable sources privy to the player movements in the Premier Soccer League, it’s now emerged that Amakhosi (Chiefs) have asked questions about whether Stellenbosch would be willing to sell the experienced star” wrote the publication.
