Kaizer Chiefs are thought to be in talks to sign one of their longest standing midfield targets from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the new season.

Stellenbosch are believed to have already sanctioned the sale of another star midfielder in Junior Mendieta to Mamelodi Sundowns and could now sell another to Chiefs.

Chiefs are thought to be set to benefit from Stellenbosch themselves, having thought to have lost out on Mendieta to Sundowns, who triggered his R10 million buyout clause.

The Cape Winelands side is now believed to be ready to sanction the sale of another star midfielder in Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Mthethwa is a player that has long been touted as a target for Chiefs and it was expected that they would test Stellenbosch’s resolve with a bid last season, but it never came.

This time around, it was also expected that things would prove to be even more difficult if Amakhosi trying to sign him, with the Western Cape side saying none of their top players will be for sale.

But now according to Soccer-Laduma Stellenbosch may change their tune and soften their stance on not selling their key players, as they are thought to have started dialogue with Chiefs for a possible transfer of Mthethwa.

“As it stands, now Stellenbosch won’t have a very big problem selling Mthethwa because they know his contract is coming to an end in June 2024 so this is their chance of making some money out of the deal, Because in the next window in January, he could be free to sign a pre- contract with a team of his choice and they don’t want to risk that.

“At the same time Chiefs want the player. Because in the next window in January, he could be free to sign a pre- contract with a team of his choice and they don’t want to risk that. At the same time Chiefs want the player.” Said a source to same publication.

It is no secret that Chiefs are keen to revamp their midfield, having already signed Edson Castillo and if they can add Mthethwa, they would be very close to doing so.
